ADD/ ADHD Etymology

ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) became a diagnosis in the third edition of the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" (1980) and was expanded to ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in the DSM-III (1987). ADHD is now considered the correct acronym to use, though many lay people and a few professionals still refer to the disorder as ADD.
I am not too terribly interested in imposing any sort of rules of order on my content as far as what the neurological disorder is going to be labeled. For the most part I have found myself in the habit of using "ADHD" when I am writing about it, though I know I've also used "ADD" to a lesser extent. When talking about it I commonly use "ADD" because that acronym just rolls off the tongue easier.
I submit here that the two acronyms do not really aptly describe my experience with the condition, and that it should be called Selective Hyper-Focus Disorder (SHFD)
Ultimately, I say refer to it however you want ... we all kind of know what we're talking or writing about here anyway.
